Most Maltese flats already run on split systems. The summer job is usually one more indoor unit, a second outdoor bracket, or a service before June. Those are not the same bill. Mixing them is how a filter clean turns into a new compressor without anyone saying the machine has changed.
This page is the euro briefing for a Malta air-conditioning install. It is not a UK boiler page and it is not a list of installers. When you want a number, open trades in Malta or the Malta electrical list and place the call yourself. For a leaking flat roof, use the waterproofing note instead.
Published Malta bands
Ixtri, a Malta marketplace, publishes typical AC ranges as a briefing, not a tariff. Its guide puts a split-system supply-and-fit around €600–€1,500. Brand, copper-run length and the wall finish sit inside that spread. A relocate of an existing unit is a different job, published there at about €180–€400. A service visit for one unit is published at about €35–€70, with a gas top-up as a separate line.
| Job | Typical published band | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Service one unit | €35–€70 | Ixtri Malta AC guide |
| Relocate an existing unit | €180–€400 | Same Ixtri guide |
| Split-system supply and fit | €600–€1,500 | Same Ixtri guide |
| Install labour only, up to 4 m of copper | €195 including VAT | Sound Machine published install add-on |
Sound Machine, a Malta retailer, publishes a separate install add-on of €195 including VAT, for up to four metres of copper. That is one shop’s labour line for a unit you already bought, not a national average for supply-and-fit. If the first number you hear is near €195, ask whether the indoor unit, outdoor unit, extra copper, electrical connection and making-good sit inside it. They often do not.
Ixtri also notes a mid-June to early-September queue, and says a peak-season surcharge of 20–40% is common. That is their market note, not a rule this site can honour. Book the survey before the first heatwave if you can.
Valletta, Sliema and the rest of the island
This directory treats Malta as one list. Valletta, Sliema, St Julian’s, Birkirkara, Mosta and Gozo share the same cards. The van still has to reach your street. A Sliema apartment with a rear terrace is a different day from a Valletta townhouse where the only compressor wall faces the street.
Valletta and other protected streetscapes are where the outdoor unit becomes a planning question, not only a bracket. A change to the façade can need development permission under the Development Planning Act, Chapter 552. Ask a perit before the first hole. A condominium or block administrator can also refuse a terrace position even when the Planning Authority would allow it.
Gozo adds a crossing and a smaller labour pool. The published euro band does not freeze that. Ask whether the quote includes the trip, or whether a second visit to commission the unit is extra.
REWS, pipework and the outdoor unit
Electrical installation work in Malta is regulated by the Electrical Installations Regulations S.L. 545.24. Work in scope of those regulations must be carried out under an authorisation issued by the Regulator for Energy and Water Services. There are two everyday tickets: Authorisation A for single-phase installations, and Authorisation B for single-phase and qualifying three-phase work. REWS publishes the authorised lists; the Authorisation A and B electrician lists were updated on 6 August 2026.
REWS Technical Document F Part 2, on minimum energy-performance requirements for building services, also says comfort-cooling installers should be approved by the manufacturer or supplier, and that exposed refrigeration pipework should be insulated and enclosed in protective trunking. A quote that is silent on trunking is not the same as “trunking included”.
The indoor unit still needs a condensate drain that does not drip on a neighbour’s terrace. The outdoor unit still needs a load-bearing wall or a legal roof position. Those two details move more bills than the brand name on the box.
What moves the price more than the locality name
- Copper run. Four metres is a different job from a chase across two rooms and down a shaft.
- Electrical capacity. A new dedicated point and a certificate are not the same as “plug it into the nearest socket”.
- The wall. Globigerina limestone and a rendered party wall do not take the same fixings.
- Making-good. Chasing, plaster and paint are often a second trade.
- When you book. A May survey and an August emergency are not the same diary.
Ask the person who answers to name the indoor unit, outdoor unit, copper, cable, gas charge, electrical certificate, trunking, condensate and VAT as separate lines. A cheaper figure is often the smaller scope.
What usually sits outside the first figure
Extra copper beyond the first few metres, a new electrical point, a roof crane or scaffolding, making-good, a condominium application, and a perit’s Planning Authority filing are the common extras. Standard VAT in Malta is 18%. A quote that is silent on VAT is not the same as “VAT included”.
A unit warranty covers the machine. It does not cover an install that was never commissioned, a drain that was never trapped, or a compressor that was bolted to a façade that needed a permit. Ask who holds the completion paperwork.
What to have on the call
Have the room that overheats, whether you already own a unit, how far the outdoor position is from the indoor wall, and whether the façade is listed or sits on a main street. Ask whether the installer holds the matching REWS authorisation, whether the outdoor position has been checked with a perit, and whether the written figure includes electrical certification.
This site does not email the installer. Open electrical trades in Malta or the Malta list and use the number on the card.
Questions before you treat this as a bill
How much does a split-system air conditioner cost to install in Malta?
Ixtri’s Malta AC guide publishes a supply-and-fit band of about €600–€1,500. Brand, copper run and wall finish move the total. A figure here is not a quote from this site.
Does electrical work on an air conditioner need a REWS authorisation?
Electrical installation work in scope of S.L. 545.24 must be carried out under a REWS Authorisation A or B. Authorisation A covers single-phase work. Authorisation B also covers qualifying three-phase work.
Do I need a Planning Authority permit for an outdoor unit?
A change to the façade can need development permission. Valletta and other protected streetscapes are the usual pinch points. Ask a perit before the bracket goes on the wall.
Where do I find a Malta electrician or AC installer?
Open the Malta electrical list and use the number on the profile. This site does not send your job to anyone.
